Cool it Down

Hey Reader!

A friend told me yesterday, “I feel like my brain is boiling.”

Things are busy! It’s hot! There is seemingly chaos all around! Information is coming to us at a record breaking rate and we are trying to process it all!

Our brains were never meant to deal with so much content. They are on overload, trying to sort through it all, deciding what is an actual threat and what is a perceived threat, what can I do something about and what can I let go, what is information I need to store and what is useless to me.

It’s a LOT of work!

And, yes, a lot of energy is being burned to keep it all running. So no wonder our brains feel like they’re boiling!

How can we keep sane let alone healthy given all we have to contend with?

Connection is the key to cooling it down

Taking just 2 minutes to connect with your internal state can help you regulate your nervous system, prioritize what really matters, and make intentional actions.

There are many ways to do this.

Here are a few:

  • Focusing on your breath.
  • Feeling the ridges of your fingerprint with the same finger on the opposite hand.
  • Lying in a hammock and looking at the light coming through the leaves in the tree above you.
  • Floating in a body of water with minimal effort (my personal favorite.)
  • Turning your attention to the frequency of the energy that’s moving through your body and imagining it settling like the snowflakes in a snow globe.

Co-regulate by connecting with others.

Choose an activity that will keep you both busy and engaged like walking, swimming, crafting, or cooking and let the conversation go where it will. Focus on releasing any agenda and just being in community. Notice any urge to check your phone or disconnect in other ways and silently note to yourself, “This is a moment of discomfort.” Just let it be there and watch it dissipate like the snow globe snowflakes as you send it compassion and refocus on connecting.

What other ideas did this spark for you about how you might cool down through connection to yourself and others? You’re so creative, I’m sure you can come up with even better ones than what I listed here, Reader. Share with me what works for you! I’m always looking for more opportunities and methods to come home to myself in this turbulent time.

With love,

Coach Katie
