This month I am taking on a month long challenge focused on self care. I am inviting you to join me.
Self Care Defined
People often confuse self care with pampering, but it is so much more than that.
It is really about supporting yourself in body, mind, and spirit so that you can move out of survival mode toward a more sustainable, flexible, calm, safe, connected, and responsive state, often referred to as ventral vagal.
There are many ways to do this of course, and I am always about finding the way that works for you! Here are some things I plan on doing for myself that you can use to get your own ideas churning. (Just by naming these things in writing to you all is a great first step in holding myself accountable.)
Spending more time outside
Pausing to check in with my internal state, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Acknowledging it and responding with compassion.
Setting limits on mindless activities that leave me feeling numb or depleted. (scrolling, consuming media, ruminating)
Putting tiny habits into place that help me feel a small sense of pride
Making my bed, always cleaning the dish I just used, five minutes of meditation each day no matter what, giving the kitchen a wipe down at the end of the day, actively reviewing my day at bedtime for things I feel proud of, including ways of being, not jus things I did.
Self Care might also be about saying no to:
Things we feel obligated to do, but give us little in return but resentment
Coping mechanisms and other habits that do serve us
Taking on extra work
Swooping in and fixing things for others
When we say NO, what are we saying YES to instead?
Restorative sleep
Filling up our own tank first
Our own health and well being
Time and space to hear our own inner needs
Self Care might also include speaking to ourselves with love instead of cruelty or examine and amend the ridiculous expectations we place on ourselves.
I invite you to spend a little time to envision what self care like like for you and maybe pick one or two small things you would like to commit to this month.
I am curious to hear from you! What do you plan to do or how do you plan to be this month? What might help you remember and stay accountable to these goals? How can you recommit to them if you forget or rebel with self compassion? What’s at stake if you continue on the path of neglecting self care? How might you feel at the end of the month if you do the things or show up in the ways you commit to?
So, by all means, get a massage, but also tend to your own needs in smaller, consistent, and sustainable ways too!
With love,
Katie
