NO-vember

Happy NO-vember Reader!

This month I invite you to join me in the practice of saying NO more often.

Saying no to:

  • Things we feel obligated to do, but give us little in return but resentment
  • Coping mechanisms and other habits that do serve us
  • Taking on extra work
  • Swooping in and fixing things for others

When we say NO, what are we saying YES to instead?

Yes to:

  • Restorative sleep
  • Being, having, and doing enough
  • Filling up our own tank first
  • Our own health and well being
  • Time and space to hear our own inner needs

No doesn’t have to be restrictive. No can be the gateway to more freedom and less stress!

Book Recommendation

I am currently reading The Expectation Effect by David Robsin.

It is a fascinating, science-based book about how our expectations can shape and shift our reality.

For instance, in a randomized trial measuring maximum aerobic capacity, participants were placed on a treadmill and asked to run at increasing speeds while the staff measured their peak rate of oxygen consumption (higher = better.)

They performed two of these tests. After the first test, one group was told they did really well and their score was better than most. The control group was not told how they performed.

During the second test on the treadmill, the group that was told they did well performed significantly better than the previous time and the control group actually performed slightly worse!

It is amazing to think of all the predictions we make on a daily basis, expecting something to happen that hasn’t actually occurred yet. This expectation can be the basis of our suffering and it can be helpful to challenge these thoughts from time to time? Are they true? Are they useful?

I am curious to hear from you! What are you planning on saying no to this month? What habitual expectations do you hold that are causing more suffering than necessary? How can a positive expectation be used to shape your reality?

With love,

Katie
