Hey Reader! This past week I lost my wallet. Well, more of a pouch from some old sunglasses that held all my credit cards. I was at a concert at the Minnesota State Fair with about 17,000 other people and it must have fallen out of my fanny pack one of the dozen times I took out my phone to snap a pic. I only realized it was gone the next day. If you’ve ever lost your wallet, you know that sinking feeling! This time I was able to feel that sinking feeling and not freak out about it! I had a sense that the worst possible thing I would have to encounter is cancelling my cards, editing all accounts attached to them, and maybe submitting a fraud claim. But I also had the feeling that my wallet would come back to me. I wasn’t sure why, but I had a kind of faith that it would and that no matter what, things would be okay. I called the state fair lost and found (some really kind people work there by the way) and submitted a claim. They told me that nothing had been turned in yet, but that crews do regular sweeps and it could still make it back to the lost and found with in the next day or so. I decided to just monitor my cards to check to see if any unauthorized purchases had been made and give a little time for the wallet to make its way back to me. No charges had happened since my last purchase. This was a good sign! That night I got a call at 10:15 from the lost and found! Everything was there! I picked up my wallet the next day. What is happening for me?I tell you all this, not to gloat, but as a story about a mini miracle. In a world where we see what’s going wrong most of the time and all the terrible things that happen to us or to those around us, we can often fail to see the things that are happening for us. How many tiny miracles do we miss each day that are on a much smaller and less noticeable scale? How many things worked in your favor just to land you right here in this very moment? From the right sperm fertilizing the right egg to the car that allowed you to merge into the entering lane of traffic on the freeway to work today? When we can start to notice all the things that are going right we can also call off the hyper-vigilant state of our sympathetic nervous system. The part of you that’s always on the look out for danger. The part that believes the world is a hostile and dangerous place and the people in it are out to take advantage of you and screw you over every time. When we acknowledge all the times when things actually work out, when we aren’t hurt, we begin to see acts of kindness, moments of serendipity, and we start to feel downright lucky. Things don’t just happen to us. We can make an internal shift in the way we respond to whatever does happen. We have some agency in how we react! When we feel that sense of agency we are able to separate ourselves from things that happen, take it less personally. Then once we have that distance, we can see all the ways in which things happen for us. The world becomes a more hospitable place and we start seeing tiny miracles everywhere. Don’t panic!
I also tell this story to highlight the changes I have made to how I respond when something goes wrong. In the past, I would have totally freaked out. But I called upon my inner wisdom and experience that knew panicking is rarely helpful and in most cases causes more harm. In the case of chronic symptoms, this is exactly how to respond to avoid further amplification. Getting a flare can be scary like the sinking feeling of losing your wallet. So many questions begin to mount.
Or perhaps we beat ourselves up for being in this predicament in the first place.
Instead of hopping on those thought trains, we can pause and take a breath. We can get some distance and perspective. Reassure yourself
Back to the wallet…While I’m thankful beyond belief this story had a happy ending, I also know that it could have been more difficult to deal with. I chose faith and optimism and that choice in itself eased my nervous system and gave me further faith that I could get through any difficult next steps with grace and calm as well.
