Authenticity vs Attachment: Finding Our Way Back To Who We Really Are

Hey Reader!

Today is Day of the Dead. So thinking about our own mortality is not too far of a stretch at this moment, right?

In her book, The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, Bronnie Ware, a palliative care nurse, interviewed dozens of people at the end of life about what they most regretted.

This was the #1 answer:

I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.

If you were to suddenly find yourself with very little time left, where might you be in relation to living an authentic life?

Would you spend much time on fitting in or would you try to leave your unique mark on the world without a care to what anyone else thinks?

Do you feel like you have given up a lot of who you really are in order to be accepted (into your family, into society, a work culture, or friend group?)

We all have to do this to some degree. We can’t have little narcissists running around! But problems arise when the balance tips too far in favor of attachment over authenticity. Many actions that once led to attachment and safety no longer serve us and we confuse the behavior for who we are.

Here are some of the ways learned attachment patterns show up.

  • Stuffing emotions
  • Hiding ourselves
  • People-pleasing
  • Perfectionism
  • Harsh Inner Critic
  • The Need to Control
  • The Need to be Right
  • The need to achieve to be acceptable

The longer we lean on these things, the more dysregulated our nervous systems become. This can lead to both mental and physical distress, addiction, and chronic disease.

“‘If I am authentic, I won’t be loved anymore. If I am not loved, I won’t survive.’ This is the source of all pathology, whether it’s physical or mental.”
-Gabor Maté

Gabor Maté speaks more about this idea here:

The truth is you are and always have been worthy of love just by existing. The conditions put on you or you put on yourself in order to be loved don’t have to hold you back from that truth.

Authenticity Coaching

In coaching many people with chronic symptoms over the past two years, I have discovered that they are often struggling with attachment patterns that are no longer serving them.

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to address this imbalance before it results in chronic symptoms?

This is what led me to develop a new coaching offering aimed at becoming more of who you were meant to be in the world.

With authenticity comes ease, freedom and possibility.

What would be possible if you truly felt at home in your body and around many different kinds of people? If you didn’t feel any need to apologize for who you are?

As your health coach, I will:

  • Guide you as you find your unique path to wellbeing and authenticity.
  • Partner with you as you explore your vision of a healthy, happy life.
  • Help you identify the challenges you are currently facing, and find solutions to them that will get you closer to your goals.

Together we find your unique definition of healthy thriving!

Not one of us can do it alone. We need reflection and support from another to help us see our greatest strengths and leverage those strengths to be who we were meant to be in this world.

Your thoughts?

Some recent praise:

“I have been working with the Katie for about 4 months now. She has been amazing and has offered information and videos specifically geared towards me and my healing. I have been in pain for about 12 years solid, every single day. In the past four months since I started with Katie, my pain has been reduced significantly, and I am starting to have days with no pain at all. When the pain starts, I now know how to handle the pain and how to calm my nervous system so that I can deal with it better. I would coaching with Katie to anyone who is suffering with chronic pain.” -Debbie C.
